Let me explain you what WordPress categories and subcategories are. I’ll show you how to add category to your post and also how to create and sort categories or change and delete them.
Table of Contents
What are categories?
You can group your WordPress posts into categories. The categories are topic areas you have on the website. This is usually a group of posts with similar topics.
Categories can have their own subcategories. Only posts can be added to categories. Pages cannot be categorized.
Categories make site visitors more familiar with page content. They will also help your orientation when looking for a specific post in the post list. With categories, you will be able to filter your posts.
Creating a new category in WordPress
To create a new category in WordPress, select “Categories” in the administration menu.
In order to create a new category, you need to fill in blank spaces:
Name — this is the name of the category that will be displayed on the website.
Slug — the name of the category to create the URL. It should not contain diacritics and capital letters. Separate words with a hyphen. For example, for the “Sea and Oceans” category, it will be “sea-and-oceans”.
Superior Category — if you have multiple categories on your site that have their own subcategories, you can set which category will be superior to the new category. If this is the main category, select “None.”
Description — if you fill in this box, its content will appear in the category list on the right side of the screen.
Now click “Add New Category”.
Editing categories
To edit categories in WordPress, move the cursor over the name of any category.
You will see several options:
Edit – this option allows you to edit the name, slug, superior category, and category description.
Quick Edit – editing the name and slug.
Delete – deletes the category from the list.
View – displays all posts that are in a particular category.
If you want to delete several categories at once, you can click the checkboxes next to their names. Then click “Bulk Actions”, “Delete” and “Apply”. You don’t need to worry that deleting a category will also remove posts that have been associated with that category. Add a new category to posts that don’t belong to any category now.
How to add categories to posts
In the list of all your posts, you have, among other things, the “Categories” column. When you create a post without a category assignment, you will see “unlisted” in this column.
You can include a post in a specific category while editing or posting. This method will automatically add the selected category to the post. You will find the necessary tools at the bottom right of the screen.
Click “Add New Category” to add a new category. You can also set which will be its superior category. Now click “Add New Category”. To assign a post to an existing category, click the checkbox next to its name.
Changing the category
You can easily change the category by clicking “Quick Edit” under the post name. This option appears under the post name in the post list when you move the cursor over it.
I have written in more detail about the individual features in my post What is the difference between a post and a WordPress website. Another way is to change the category while editing the post.
