How to properly configure WordPress settings

A tutorial on how to properly configure WordPress settings for individual parts such as comments, slogan, persistent links, indexing, categories, images and GDPR.

How to properly configure WordPress settings

The WordPress settings section offers the ability to configure page settings. Typically, you need to do the page setup only once – at a time when your website is launched. However, they can be changed later as well.

WordPress – general settings

Under General Settings, you can select some basic page attributes. This includes the page title, slogan, URL address, and email address of the site administrator. In addition, you select the page language, time zone and date and time. You can also set the role of new site users. Make sure to save your changes by clicking Save Changes.

💡 Tip: Choosing the right hosting is crucial for a fast website ⏱ . I recommend betting on verified quality ➡️ Bluehost or SiteGround.

Writing settings

Writing settings have several options that relate to the content of a web page. You can choose the default category and format for posts or publish posts by email. Click Save Changes to save your changes.

Reading

This feature allows you to configure how the page is displayed. You can choose to view the home page or the latest posts here.

Furthermore, you can edit how many posts appear in RSS and whether full posts or just their previews are displayed – I recommend displaying only summaries, because this way no one can steal your posts. Some speculators steal RSS content like that automatically.

The last choice is Search Engine Visibility. If you check the box in this line, your site will remain hidden from search engines – that is, it won’t be indexed by Google and other search engine robots. The box must remain blank if you want it to be visible to search engines.

💡 Tip for themes: From premium themes, I have good experience with themes Divi, Avada and with page builder Elementor.

Setting of comments in WordPress

In this section of the administration, you set comments. You will also set up an interaction between your site and other blogs. In addition, there are settings for Pingbacks and Trackbacks. There is also an option to allow site visitors to add comments to posts and other comment settings as, for example, a visitor’s obligation to register if he wants to comment the post, and the like.

In the comment settings, you’ll also choose options like email notification for a new comment, approving comments before being displayed on the page, and a blacklist of comments.

Image Settings (Multimedia)

In the multimedia settings, you select the image size that will be created when you upload an image to a page. You can specify the size of the thumbnail, and both medium and large image size.

Next, you specify whether media files will be saved by month and year of publishing. You should better leave this ticked, because if you have a lot of images and all of them would be saved in just one folder, it would slow down the web load. In this case, the server would have to look for the correct image every time.

💡 Do you want a faster ⏱ website? Website speed is important for both visitors and SEO. I got the best results thanks to the WP Rocket plugin, which I highly recommend.

Permalinks

Permalinks settings

Settings of permanent links (or in short permalinks) allow you to configure the URL of the page link. You can choose from several format options.

I do not recommend using simple permanent links, due to SEO. Choose a URL format that tells Internet visitors about your site or the content of the posts. This format will be used automatically by your WordPress whenever you create a new page or add a new post to your site.

When you scroll down the page, you’ll also find the option to set URL categories and tags. Make sure to save all the changes made.

Data Protection

Privacy settings

As a website owner, you must comply with European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).See my GDPR post for more information.

In the WordPress administration settings, you have a short guide to creating a privacy policy page. If you click the “Create New Page” button, you’ll be taken to a page where you can edit your pre-prepared privacy policy page.
