Hashtags have become an integral part of social media and online marketing. But do you know how to use them properly?

What is a hashtag
A hashtag, also known as a hash tag or hashtag, is a tool that helps organize and categorize content on the Internet, especially on social media.
When using hashtags on platforms such as Twitter, Instagram or Facebook, you can add your post to a wider discussion on a given topic or view posts from other users on the same topic.
It consists of two parts : a hash (#), also called a ‘hash’, and a keyword or phrase, called a ‘tag’.
| Emblem | Meaning |
|---|---|
| # | Hash |
| Tag | A keyword or phrase |
The rules for creating hashtags are simple – start with the # symbol and immediately after it write a word or group of words without spaces. The letters can be lowercase or uppercase, it does not change the functionality, although lowercase letters are often preferred for readability.
Using a hashtag allows users to easily search and access information focused on certain topics or conversations. When you add a hashtag to your post, you automatically become part of a wider discussion on that topic. For example, if you write a tweet and include #sun, your post will appear along with others that also contain this hastag.
Hashtags make it easy to follow trends and news.
It is important to incorporate a relevant hashtag so that your content reaches the prescribed audience and attracts the attention of those searching for a specific topic.
Avoid overusing hashtags in a single post, as this can look spammy and reduce the effectiveness of your content.
Where did the hashtag come from?
Your first encounter with a hashtag was probably on a social network, but its origins go further back in history, specifically in community IRC (Internet Relay Chat) networks, where the symbol was used to denote channels or groups.
Symbol# , known as the grid, gained prominence in 2007 when Internet activist and lawyer Chris Messina proposed using the character to group posts by topic on Twitter. His idea was simple: place before a word or phrase# , which creates a link that allows people to follow the discussion on that topic.
A brief history of hashtag usage:
- Before 2007: symbol
#used in IRC networks - August 23, 2007: Chris Messina tweets a proposal to use hashtags on Twitter
- After 2007: the massive adoption of hashtags on various social networks
Hashtag today represents a way to categorize content and makes it easier to search for posts with a specific theme. You can see it used in Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other platforms, where it performs the function of grouping posts into thematic groups for easier searching and following discussions.
How to use hashtags correctly
When using hashtags on social networks such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok, it is important to follow certain principles in order to effectively make your content accessible to the target group.
Within each platform, including LinkedIn and YouTube, hashtags can have a different impact, but the basic principles of use are similar.
On Twitter, it’s ideal to use a smaller number of hashtags to keep your tweets clear – ideally around two to three.
You can use more hashtags on Instagram , which will increase the likelihood of your posts being discovered, but it is recommended to limit their number to a maximum of ten to avoid spam.
- Search : By including relevant hashtags, you allow users to search and discover your content.
- Usage : Add a hashtag to your video title or description to group your post with similar topics.
When creating hashtags, it’s important to think about:
- Relevance : Choose hashtags that are directly related to the topic of your post.
- Simplicity : Avoid overly complex or long hashtags so that users can easily remember and use them.
- Uniqueness : To emphasize originality, you can create your own hashtag for campaigns or events.
By following the hashtag tips, you will increase the visibility of your content and therefore the opportunity to connect with potential followers or customers.
How to write a hashtag
The hashtag character, also known as the hash mark (#), is a common part of social media and online communication today. While it may seem complicated to find it on the keyboard, it’s easy once you know how.
On the Slovak keyboard, you can create a hashtag symbol by using the Alt Gr (right Alt) key together with the X key. Alternatively, if you prefer a numeric code, press Left Alt and enter the numbers 3 and 5 on the numeric keypad.
For users with an English keyboard, it is enough to press the combination Shift + 3 .
Procedure according to keyboard type:
| Keyboard type | Key combination |
|---|---|
| Slovak | Alt Gr + X or Left Alt + 35 |
| English | Shift + 3 |
| German | left Alt + 35 |
When you need to use a hashtag in your social media posts or when searching for trending topics, simply type the hashtag symbol followed by the relevant word or phrase without spaces.
Note that the keyboard must be in a mode that supports entering numeric codes, so Num Lock must be activated when using a numeric code.
Remember these keyboard shortcuts so you’ll be able to insert a hashtag quickly and efficiently, no matter where you are or what device you’re using.
Summary
Hashtags are a tool that can increase the reach and visibility of your content on social media, but it’s important to use them thoughtfully and judiciously.
