How to add an image in WordPress

A tutorial on how to add an image in WordPress – how to upload it from your computer and set a caption and title. I’ll also show you how to set a picture for the post.

How to add an image in WordPress

In WordPress, all your images and other media are stored in a media library. Adding them to a post or page is very easy. You can also add links to download PDF and Word documents. You can also insert, align, and link images and their galleries.

Uploading the image

If you want to add an image to a post or page, click the “Add File” button in the visual editor. Your Media Library window opens. If the image you want to insert is not in the media library, click “Upload Files”. This will allow you to upload an image from your computer.

Simply move the files you want to insert into your media library from your computer or select the option “Select Files”. After uploading your images, a media library opens with all the illustrations you already have on the page. Another way to add images to the media library is through the administration menu. Find the option “Multimedia” and select “Add new”.

All images in the library are displayed in the order you uploaded them to the page. At the top of the library, you can choose to display images, audio, or video files. You can also filter them by date here.

Select the desired image from the list by clicking. On the right side of the screen, you’ll see a thumbnail with basic information below and four fields: Title, Caption, Alt Text, and Description.

Title – in the “Title” field you will find the name of the image as you named it on your computer.

Caption – displays image information.

Alt text – this line serves for search engines. It will also appear if the search engine is unable to load the image. To optimize your site’s SEO, it’s a good idea to use a descriptive title or description for your image.

Description – used for a longer description of the image. Appears when moving from preview image to large.

You can also choose how you want it to appear for each image:

Alignment – select how you want to align the illustration. Left, Right, Centered or No Alignment.

Link to – sets what happens when you click on the illustration.

Size – Here you can choose to display a thumbnail, medium, large, or full-size image. Next to the size information, there are also shown dimensions given in pixels.

Once you’ve set up everything, click “Embed to Post”. The media, or if you have selected multiple images at once, will be inserted into the text instead of the current cursor position. This way you can add as many illustrations to your post as you like.

Basic editing of the image

When you click on an embedded image, you will see a table with several icons. You can align it left, center, right, or display without alignment. There are also icons for editing and removing it.

When you click the image edit button, the “Image Details” window appears. Only some attributes can be edited in this window. If you want to edit multiple attributes, you need to go back to the “Add File” option.

Click the multimedia you want to edit to see all its attributes. For example, you can set the insertion of a different size of image. To learn more about how to edit your illustrations, read my post Editing images in WordPress.

Add an featured image

If your WordPress theme allows it, you can add an illustrative image (so-called thumbnail or featured image) to the post. Scroll down the page and you’ll find the following window at the bottom right:
