eToro is one of the best-known multi-asset investment platforms, combining stocks and ETFs, cryptocurrencies, CFDs, thematic portfolios, and social investing through CopyTrader. Its main appeal is the simple interface and the ability to follow and copy the public portfolios of other investors.

In this review, I looked at current fees, regulation, deposits and withdrawals, CopyTrader, Smart Portfolios, the demo account, customer support, and public user experiences. I will also explain where eToro is strong and what you should watch for when dealing with CFDs, currency conversion, and cryptocurrencies.
Quick summary
I recommend eToro mainly to people who want a simple platform for stocks, ETFs, and social investing in one place. Its biggest strengths are CopyTrader, the broad asset selection, and the clear interface. The main drawbacks are a more complex fee structure for some products and the high risk associated with CFD trading.
My overall rating is 8.6/10. eToro can make sense for beginners as well as more experienced investors who want more flexibility than a purely passive investment service offers. It is less suitable if you only want the cheapest possible long-term ETF investing without additional features.
CFD risk warning: CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 52% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
eToro is a multi-asset investment platform. The value of your investments may go up or down. Your capital is at risk.
What is eToro?
eToro is an online investment and trading platform founded in 2007 that brings several asset classes together in one account. Users can access stocks, ETFs, cryptocurrencies, CFDs, and ready-made thematic portfolios, while social investing and CopyTrader are major parts of the platform.
Unlike a simple robo-advisor, eToro lets you choose most investments yourself. The platform provides a trading interface, charts, public investor profiles, and tools for copying their trades. With every order, it is important to check whether you are buying the underlying asset or opening a CFD position.
Regulation and safety
European clients are served by eToro (Europe) Ltd, which is regulated by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) under licence 109/10. eToro states that client money and assets are held separately from the company’s own assets. Regulation, however, does not protect investors from normal market losses or declines in the value of investments.
When assessing safety, I therefore separate the broker’s regulatory and operational framework from investment risk itself. A regulated platform can still offer a product whose value falls significantly. CFD risk is even higher because leverage can amplify losses.
Pricing and fees
eToro does not have one universal fee because costs vary by asset type, account, currency, and trading method. Opening and maintaining an investment account is free, and the current fee schedule also lists no inactivity fee. Additional costs can still apply to stocks, cryptocurrencies, CFDs, and withdrawals from a USD account.
| Item | Current fee / condition |
|---|---|
| Account opening | free |
| Account management | free |
| Inactivity | free under the current fee schedule |
| ETFs | 0% commission on standard ETF trades; general account costs may still apply |
| Stocks | a commission of 1 or 2 USD may apply on opening and closing depending on country and exchange |
| Cryptocurrencies | Bronze, Silver, and Gold: 1% per manually opened crypto position; higher Club tiers may have lower rates |
| Stock and ETF CFDs | 0.15% when opening and 0.15% when closing |
| Crypto CFDs | 1% on each side of the trade |
| Withdrawal from a USD account | 5 USD; 30 USD minimum withdrawal |
| Withdrawal from a local currency account | free if a local account is available to the client |
| CopyTrader | no additional copy fee; costs of the individual open positions still apply |
I recommend checking the “estimated cost” directly before confirming every trade. Fees vary by market and product, and CFDs can also incur overnight financing charges. The market spread can affect the effective cost even when eToro does not charge a separate commission.

Deposits and withdrawals
eToro’s minimum first deposit currently starts from 50 USD, while the exact amount can vary by country and payment method. Bank transfers may have separate minimums. Eligible clients can also have access to a local currency account, which may help reduce unnecessary currency conversions.
A withdrawal from a USD investment account currently carries a fixed 5 USD fee and a 30 USD minimum. A withdrawal from a supported local currency account may be free and have no minimum amount. The available payment methods vary by country.
Stocks and ETFs
ETFs are among the simplest eToro products from a cost perspective because the platform lists 0% commission for standard ETF trades. For stocks, a 1 or 2 USD commission can apply when opening and closing a position depending on the country and exchange. Always check the exact cost shown for the specific order.
An important detail is that not every position displayed under a stock or ETF necessarily represents ownership of the underlying asset. Short and leveraged positions are executed as CFDs, and under certain product restrictions some non-leveraged buy positions may also be marked as CFDs. The label in the trade window is what matters.
Cryptocurrencies and CFDs
Cryptocurrencies and CFDs are a significantly higher-risk part of eToro’s offering and have their own fee structure. Bronze, Silver, and Gold clients pay 1% on manually opened crypto positions, while stock and ETF CFDs are charged at 0.15% on each side of the trade.
CFDs can also incur overnight fees, and leverage can materially amplify the outcome. This is one reason I do not consider CFDs a good starting point for a complete beginner. eToro states that 52% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider.

Features and specifications
eToro’s biggest differentiator is not simply the number of products, but the combination of traditional investing with social features. CopyTrader lets you automatically copy selected investors, Smart Portfolios provide thematic portfolios, and the demo account lets you test the platform without risking your own money.
CopyTrader
CopyTrader automatically copies the trades of a selected user in proportion to the amount you allocate to them. The current minimum for copying one investor is 200 USD, and the minimum size of a single copied position is 1 USD. You can stop, pause, or adjust copying while retaining control of your account.
eToro does not charge an additional fee for CopyTrader itself. The underlying costs of positions opened by the copied investor still apply, such as spreads or overnight fees on CFDs. A copied investor’s historical performance does not guarantee future results.
Smart Portfolios
Smart Portfolios are ready-made thematic portfolios built by eToro or its partners, giving you exposure to a broader basket of assets through one solution. eToro does not list a separate management fee or commission for the portfolio itself, but the costs and risks of the underlying assets remain.
Unlike CopyTrader, you are not copying one specific person but an investment theme or prepared strategy. This can be useful for diversification, but it remains an investment exposed to market risk. Before investing, I would review the portfolio composition, sector concentration, and whether it contains CFDs.
Demo account and app
Every registered eToro user receives a virtual demo account with 100,000 USD in virtual funds. The demo is useful for learning how orders, charts, and CopyTrader work without risking your own capital. The mobile app also lets you manage your portfolio, monitor markets, and place orders from your phone.
At the time of this review, eToro’s main Android app had more than 10 million downloads and around 156,000 reviews on Google Play. The interface is visually simpler than professional trading terminals, which is useful for everyday investors, although advanced traders may want more detailed tools.
Advantages
eToro’s biggest advantage is the combination of a simple investment app, a social community, and a broad range of products. It can work for someone buying an ETF as well as a user interested in CopyTrader or more active trading. The demo account and clear cost display before confirming a trade are also practical.
- clear web and mobile interface,
- CopyTrader and public investor profiles,
- Smart Portfolios without a separate portfolio management fee,
- 0% commission on standard ETF trades,
- demo account with 100,000 USD of virtual capital,
- stocks, ETFs, cryptocurrencies, and other markets in one account,
- eToro (Europe) Ltd is regulated by CySEC,
- local currency accounts may be available to eligible clients,
- currently no inactivity fee.
Disadvantages
eToro’s biggest drawback is that the simple interface can hide a relatively complex fee structure and the important distinction between underlying assets and CFDs. Extra costs may arise with stocks, cryptocurrencies, currency conversion, and USD-account withdrawals. CFDs also carry a high risk of rapid losses.
- fees vary by asset, exchange, account, and country,
- some stock trades may incur a 1 or 2 USD commission on both opening and closing,
- manual crypto trades are charged at 1% on the basic Club tiers,
- withdrawals from a USD account cost 5 USD,
- CFDs can incur overnight fees and carry substantially higher risk,
- copying a successful investor does not guarantee future profit,
- human support is available in a limited set of languages.
My experience
What stands out most to me about eToro is how simply it combines regular investing with social features. If you want to buy an ETF or stock while also following the public portfolios of other investors, you do not need to switch between multiple services. The interface is understandable even without professional trading experience.
I would pay the most attention to the trade window before confirming a position. You need to know whether you are buying an underlying asset or a CFD, what commission applies to that market, and whether overnight financing can be charged. A simple app does not mean every available product is simple.
I see CopyTrader as a feature that genuinely distinguishes eToro from many traditional brokers. I would not treat it as an automatic recipe for profit, however. A copied investor can change strategy, take more risk, or move into losses. Before copying, review the risk profile, portfolio composition, and a longer performance history.
There are simpler solutions for purely passive ETF investing. Portu is one example of automated portfolio management in markets where the service is available. In my view, eToro is more suitable when you want greater control and a broader set of options in one account.
User reviews
Public eToro ratings are mostly positive, although there is also a noticeable group of dissatisfied customers. At the time of this review, Trustpilot showed a score of 4.1 out of 5 from roughly 32,000 reviews. Users often praise the simplicity and CopyTrader, while negative feedback commonly concerns support, accounts, and fees.
Five-star ratings accounted for 66% of Trustpilot reviews and one-star ratings for 20%. I do not see those numbers as a substitute for your own assessment of the service. Public reviews are self-selected, and for a financial platform I place more weight on regulation, fees, account terms, and the specific product you plan to use.
Alternatives
The best eToro alternative depends on what you want to achieve. Portu is more focused on automated long-term ETF portfolios in markets where it is available, Revolut is useful if you want investments alongside everyday finances in one app, and Binance is more relevant to users primarily focused on cryptocurrencies.
Portu
Portu can be a better alternative for investors who do not want to select individual stocks or ETFs and prefer an automated portfolio. eToro gives you more freedom and CopyTrader, while Portu handles portfolio construction, regular investing, and rebalancing. Availability should be checked for your country of residence.
If Portu is available where you live and you want to automate long-term investing as much as possible, you can check Portu. If you want to choose assets yourself, access a broader range of markets, or copy other investors, eToro is more flexible.
Revolut
Revolut is particularly suitable for users who want to add investing to banking and payment features they already use. eToro is more investment-focused and offers social trading and CopyTrader. Revolut can be more convenient if you prefer one app for cards, payments, currencies, and simpler investments.
For someone who already uses Revolut actively, Revolut can be an easier starting point. If you place more emphasis on investment tools, public investor profiles, and copying strategies, eToro has a broader investment focus.
Binance
Binance is mainly an alternative when cryptocurrencies are your priority rather than stocks and ETFs. eToro is a multi-asset platform combining traditional investments, crypto, and social features. Binance is a cryptocurrency exchange with a deeper digital-asset ecosystem, but I would not treat it as a direct replacement for eToro for regular stock investing.
If you primarily want cryptocurrencies and consciously accept their high volatility, you can look at Binance. If you want to combine ETFs, stocks, crypto, and CopyTrader in one account, eToro is more versatile.
Support and contact
eToro provides support through its Help Center, ticket system, the Tori AI assistant, and live chat with customer support. The company currently states 24/6 availability and more than seven supported languages. Exact language availability can vary by region and account.
For account problems, you can log in to the Customer Service Center and track your requests. Tori can also hand the conversation over to a support representative. With any financial service, I recommend keeping records of deposits, withdrawals, and important support communication.
Summary and rating
I rate eToro 8.6/10 and recommend it mainly to people who want to combine self-directed investing with social features. CopyTrader, the simple interface, the demo account, and the broad product range are clear strengths. The main compromise is the more complex pricing on some assets and the high risk of CFDs.
I recommend eToro if you want to buy ETFs or stocks, are interested in CopyTrader, prefer selecting investments yourself, and value access to multiple asset classes in one platform.
I do not recommend eToro if you only want fully automated passive investing, do not want to distinguish between different trade and product types, or are attracted to CFDs without fully understanding leverage, financing, and the possibility of rapid capital loss.
CFD risk warning: CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 52% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider. Frequently asked questions
The most common questions about eToro concern safety, the minimum deposit, CopyTrader, fees, and the difference between underlying assets and CFDs. The platform is regulated, but investing remains risky. Before every trade, check the position type, estimated costs, and whether the product matches your knowledge and risk tolerance.
Is eToro safe?
eToro (Europe) Ltd is an investment firm regulated by CySEC under licence 109/10 and states that client assets are segregated. This reduces operational risk compared with an unregulated service, but it does not guarantee profits. Stocks, ETFs, cryptocurrencies, and other investments can decline in value.
What is the minimum deposit on eToro?
eToro’s first minimum deposit currently starts from 50 USD, although the exact amount can vary by country and payment method. Bank transfers may have a higher minimum. Limits can change over time and may vary depending on the country, payment method, or account type.
Is eToro suitable for beginners?
Yes, eToro’s interface is simple enough for beginners, but not every product on the platform is beginner-friendly. I recommend starting with the demo account and understanding the difference between an underlying asset and a CFD. I would not recommend leveraged CFDs to a beginner without sufficient knowledge and experience.
How does CopyTrader work?
CopyTrader automatically copies the purchases and sales of a selected investor in proportion to the amount you allocate. The current minimum for copying one investor is 200 USD. You can stop or pause copying, but the outcome always depends on the copied investor’s future decisions and performance.
How much does eToro cost?
Opening and maintaining an account is free, but the total cost depends on what you trade. Standard ETF trades have 0% commission, stocks may carry a 1 or 2 USD commission, cryptocurrencies and CFDs have their own rates, and withdrawals from a USD account cost 5 USD.
Can you buy real stocks on eToro?
Yes, eToro allows you to buy underlying stocks, but not every stock position automatically represents ownership of a real share. Short and leveraged positions are executed as CFDs, and under certain product restrictions some non-leveraged purchases may also be CFDs. Always check the “CFD” label in the trade window before confirming.
CFD risk warning: CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 52% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider.
