Hetzner Review: Is This Cloud Hosting Worth It?

Its main strengths are the infrastructure, clean control panel, API and strong price-to-performance ratio. Its main drawbacks are the more technical setup, strict account verification, fragmented support and the fact that you are normally responsible for managing your own cloud server.

What is Hetzner?

Hetzner Online is a German technology company founded in 1997. It offers cloud servers, dedicated servers, web hosting, managed servers, Object Storage, Storage Box, Storage Share, load balancers, domains and other infrastructure services for individuals, developers and businesses.

It operates its own data center parks in Nuremberg and Falkenstein in Germany and Helsinki in Finland. Hetzner also offers cloud locations in Ashburn and Hillsboro in the United States and in Singapore, where it uses space in partner data centers.

Hetzner is not just a conventional web host. Its core business is infrastructure: you receive a virtual or physical server and decide how to configure the operating system, applications, security and administration. This is why it is popular with system administrators, developers, SaaS projects, agencies and operators of demanding websites.

Pricing and plans

Hetzner has several product lines, and the final price depends on the location, processor architecture, vCPU type, storage and add-ons. When checked on July 21, 2026, web hosting started at about $1.83 per month and the European CX23 cloud server at about $6.27 per month, excluding VAT and a paid IPv4 address.

The US dollar amounts are approximate conversions using the ECB reference rate from July 20, 2026. Hetzner lists and bills these European services in euros. Prices exclude VAT and apply to selected European locations. Hetzner changed pricing for new cloud orders and configuration changes on June 15, 2026, so always check the current price list before ordering.

A Primary IPv4 address for a cloud server costs an additional €0.50 per month excluding VAT, approximately $0.57, while Primary IPv6 is free. Dedicated servers may have separate IPv4 fees and a one-time setup fee. Discounted LTD configurations are also only available while capacity lasts.

Cloud resources are billed hourly up to a maximum monthly cap. Importantly, a powered-off server continues to be billed until you delete it completely. You pay for the allocated resources, not only for the time during which the virtual server is running.

Features and specifications

Hetzner offers much more than a virtual server. Its ecosystem includes an API, private networks, firewalls, load balancers, operating system images, snapshots, backups, block storage and object storage. The feature set is strong for development, production applications and self-hosted WordPress websites.

Cloud servers

Hetzner Cloud offers three main performance categories: lower-cost Cost-Optimized instances, versatile Regular Performance servers with shared resources and General Purpose servers with dedicated vCPU. The right option depends on whether you prioritize a low price, newer hardware or consistent processor performance.

Shared vCPU plans suit websites, staging environments, smaller databases and applications with variable workloads. Dedicated vCPU plans make more sense for databases, ERP systems, demanding online stores, game servers and applications that regularly place a heavy load on the processor.

Hetzner Console and automation

Hetzner Console is a clean interface for creating servers, networks, firewalls, IP addresses, storage and load balancers. Developers also get a REST API, command-line tooling and integrations with Terraform, Ansible, Kubernetes, Python and Go for infrastructure automation.

You can deploy a new server quickly, choose a location, select an instance type and use a supported system image. Common Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora, are available. Advanced users can also work with custom images and automated cloud-init configuration.

Networks, firewall and security

Cloud networks let you connect servers over private infrastructure and isolate databases or internal services from the public internet. The stateful firewall is available without a separate fee, and rules can be assigned to multiple servers. For public connectivity, you can choose IPv6, paid IPv4 or both.

Hetzner states a 99.9% cloud availability SLA with defined credits for downtime. This is the provider’s contractual commitment, not the result of my own long-term monitoring. For a critical application, I would still recommend redundancy, monitoring and backups outside a single server.

Backups and snapshots

Cloud backups are not automatically included in the server’s base price. Once paid backups are enabled, regular copies are created and the latest seven backups remain available. Snapshots are created manually, billed according to occupied storage and retained even after the server is deleted.

For an important WordPress website or online store, I would not rely on a single backup layer. A sensible setup combines Hetzner backups, application-level database and file backups, and another copy in independent storage or with a different provider.

Web hosting for WordPress

Hetzner’s conventional web hosting is easier to use than running your own cloud server. It includes administration through konsoleH, a WordPress installer, email accounts, free SSL, Varnish, DDoS protection and daily backups retained for 14 days. Higher plans add SSH, Redis and Node.js.

A domain is not included in the web hosting price and must be ordered separately. Using a domain registered outside Hetzner carries an additional fee. Web hosting may be more convenient for a small WordPress site, while the cloud provides greater control and performance flexibility for a demanding project.

Advantages

Hetzner’s biggest advantage is the combination of a European base, a broad portfolio and technical flexibility. You can choose an affordable shared cloud instance, an ARM server, dedicated vCPU, a physical server or simpler web hosting, then add networking, storage and automation.

Disadvantages

Hetzner is not managed hosting for complete beginners. With a cloud or dedicated server, you are responsible for the operating system, updates, security, WordPress, the database and incident response. In addition to the technical workload, you need to budget for IPv4, backups and some other resources.

My experience

I see Hetzner as infrastructure for users who know what they need from a server. It makes the most sense for development environments, a custom WordPress stack, containers and applications where you benefit from an API, fast server deployment and complete control over the configuration.

I did not conduct a long-term independent uptime test or benchmark every configuration for this review. My rating is therefore based on current price lists, product documentation, platform features, support terms and publicly available user reviews.

A major strength is that Hetzner does not overcomplicate basic cloud administration. You can create a server, network, firewall, IP address and volume in one interface. At the same time, it expects you to handle Linux security, web server configuration, updates and application recovery yourself.

After the price increase, I would no longer select Hetzner automatically on price alone. For each project, I would compare real CPU performance, IPv4 costs, backups, storage, data transfer and the administration time required. It can still be excellent for a technical team, while managed hosting may have a lower total cost for an ordinary business website.

User reviews

Hetzner reviews are unusually polarized. When checked on July 21, 2026, it had a Trustpilot rating of 3.1 out of 5 from 2,859 reviews. Five-star ratings represented 51% of reviews, but one-star ratings accounted for 38%, so the average alone does not reflect the very different customer experiences.

Positive reviews frequently praise performance, stability, pricing and fast responses from technical support. Satisfied customers particularly value the cloud and dedicated servers, which provide a high level of control over the infrastructure.

Negative reviews mainly discuss rejected or terminated accounts, identity verification, pricing, billing, support communication and individual network incidents. When reading reviews, I recommend distinguishing between an infrastructure problem and an issue caused by the customer’s server configuration or administration.

For a business project, I would create a test account before migrating and verify billing, supported payment methods, project limits and the required location. I would never rely on one server or a single backup service for critical data.

Hetzner alternatives

The best alternative depends on whether you need a self-managed VPS, simple WordPress hosting or a beginner-friendly provider. I selected Hostinger, Contabo, SiteGround and Bluehost as relevant options. Each addresses a different weakness of Hetzner and may be more suitable for a particular type of customer.

Hostinger

Hostinger is a better fit for beginners who want straightforward WordPress hosting or a VPS with a more approachable interface. Hetzner provides greater infrastructure flexibility, while Hostinger focuses more on launching a website quickly and simplifying administration.

I would choose Hetzner for a custom server stack, API access and cloud automation. Hostinger makes more sense for a blog, portfolio, small business website or WordPress project where you do not want to manage Linux, a web server and security updates manually.

Contabo

Contabo is a direct alternative for customers comparing VPS and dedicated servers. I would compare not only vCPU count, RAM and storage, but also real performance, location, data transfer, support and total operating costs.

In my view, Hetzner has a more polished cloud ecosystem and stronger automation options. Contabo belongs on the shortlist when a particular VPS configuration is your priority and you want to determine which provider delivers more resources for the price.

SiteGround

SiteGround is a better alternative for WordPress users who want managed hosting, easier administration and website-focused support. Hetzner is more flexible and technical, while SiteGround removes much of the server administration work.

I would choose Hetzner for a custom application, containers or a specific configuration. SiteGround can be more convenient for a business WordPress site, WooCommerce store or agency website where you do not want to manage the operating system, despite the higher price of a managed solution.

Bluehost

Bluehost is aimed more at users who want conventional web hosting and a guided WordPress setup. It does not replace Hetzner’s complete cloud infrastructure, but it can be a more approachable option for a standard website, blog or small online store.

Hetzner is the stronger choice for infrastructure control, automation and custom server configurations. Bluehost is more suitable when ease of setup and a conventional hosting workflow matter more than managing a virtual server from the operating system upward.

Support and contact

Hetzner provides support through its customer interfaces, email, telephone, documentation and community tutorials. Cloud tickets can be submitted around the clock. General questions about accounts, orders and billing are normally handled on business days from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Central European Time.

Data center technical support for dedicated servers is available 24 hours a day. Telephone support for the data center is primarily intended for dedicated servers and may require an activated telephone password or one-time code.

For cloud servers, support handles the provider’s infrastructure rather than administering your application. If WordPress, a database, an operating-system firewall or your Nginx configuration fails, you need to resolve the issue yourself or hire an external administrator.

For a technical problem, I recommend opening a ticket directly in Hetzner Console and including the incident time, IP address, server ID, logs and diagnostic results. The more precise the information, the easier it is for support to distinguish a network problem from an error in your configuration.

Summary and rating

Hetzner is a high-quality European cloud and server provider for users who want control, automation and a wide choice of infrastructure. After the price increase, it is no longer exceptionally cheap in every configuration, but the right server can still deliver very good value.

My rating: 8.4/10.

I recommend Hetzner if:

• you can manage Linux or have a system administrator,
• you want a European cloud with locations in Germany or Finland,
• you need an API, private networks and automation,
• you run a custom application, WordPress stack or containers,
• you want to compare shared, dedicated, x86 and ARM servers.

I do not recommend Hetzner if:

• you are a complete beginner without technical help,
• you want fully managed WordPress hosting,
• you do not want to handle updates, security and server monitoring,
• you expect support to troubleshoot and manage your application,
• you need a simple all-in-one hosting service rather than infrastructure.

Hetzner remains a very strong choice for a technically capable user, developer or company with a system administrator. For an ordinary WordPress website without in-house server management, I would also compare Hostinger, SiteGround and Bluehost.
